What Makes Karen so Savvy?

Before becoming a national motivational speaker, Karen owned and operated several retail fashion stores in Houston, Texas. Often, she hired many young employees with no workplace experience and zero in the retail industry. Karen had the keen ability identifying inexperienced workers who had the potential to become great employees – and they did, many staying on for years! Little did she know, that the early years were the foundation for her life’s work – understanding and managing all generations.

She began speaking in 2000 and dove deep into the study generational differences. Today her interest in the generations has become her passion and mission. Adopting the title “Millennial evangelist”, her programs include case studies, current research, and up to date new information and current discoveries about Millennials and soon to be in the workforce Gen Z.

The Back Story

Karen began her career as the youngest employee at an upscale department store in Cleveland, Ohio, where her mother worked as the first female credit manager. As a tribute to her infectious spirit, Karen was dubbed the store mascot. She worked her way up in a number of roles for the company, eventually becoming a sales associate in women’s fashion, and later in menswear.In the early days, Karen worked for two of the world’s most powerful fashion brands, Ralph Lauren and The Limited, where she first started analyzing the internal culture of large organizations—both for what fuels them and for what holds them back. She applied what she learned and then launched her own retail business.

The Brand was Classic. The name memorable – Me Too Me Too was quite the Houston rage in the 1980’s and 90’s when fashion guru Ralph Lauren’s styles were in fashion. Me Too evolved into a 4 store operation. The last store, in the prestigious River Oaks Shopping Center,  closed its doors in 1997. Karen  was the owner and CEO for 17 years. Looking back on the experience, she can  see why “Working with the Generations” is her area of expertise. She is an expert hiring, working with and selling to younger generations!In 1997, after selling the business, Karen became a retail marketing and branding consultant.For the next three years, she energized business owners and executives to approach their work and their life with a fresh, new attitude. By developing key strategies for growth, her clients were positioned for future successes.

In 2006 Karen received the prestigious Certified Speaking Professional designation, which has been bestowed upon fewer than 7% of the 5,000 speakers who belong to the International Federation of Professional Speakers. She has been honored with multiple awards, including the Toastmasters International Communications and Leadership Award and the John Wolf Award for speaking excellence. Karen is an active member of the National Speakers Association and served as president of the Houston chapter in 2006. She is active in Dress for Success and The Woman’s Home. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio State University where she also performed graduate work in education.
